Letter to Genl. Montgomery Meigs 1865 June?

Davis pleads to be allowed to see or correspond with her husband "The reports harrow me so that under happier circumstances I should be unequal to hearing them. Entreat that I may be allowed to go south out of this unhealthy climate with my unacclimated little children, while my scanty means suffices for the purpose. If required as a witness after putting my elder children to school abroad, I will gladly return for the purpose. Or if allowed to remain in the North until after my Husband's trial, I will bind myself not to do aught prredjudicial to your government, and I think you could vouch for my rigid adherence to the parole. Please answer by telegram, I have been three weeks in suspence. Tell me what you know of Mr. Davis' health." On verso is a note by Major General H.W. Birge, 1865 June 16, authorizing the transmittal of Davis' letter by telegraph "when it can be done without interfering with military business."
